Congregational Discussions

Posted : Sunday March 7, 2010

At the annual congregational meeting in January, the elders of New Life invited us to participate in thinking about what it would mean to live more intentionally, to live as a Christian in every area of life. As the founder of the New Life network, Jack Miller, used to say, “What has changed in your life since you fell in love with Jesus?” Things change when you fell in love, and Jesus changes everything when you fall in love with him. But this isn’t just for you or me individually. We need to ask that of ourselves as a community, “What needs to change in our life as a church because of our love for Jesus?” Our faith is like a tree: it has roots that nourish us and keep us firmly established, but it also has branches that can adapt to the situations, to the environment. We need to be looking at how we are doing in both being rooted in who we are as a church in Jesus and in how we need to change as a church in Philadelphia. This isn’t an endeavor that should be left to the elders and deacons alone. This requires all of us. We need to hear what the Spirit is saying to us and that requires prayer and conversation. On February 28, a survey was given to help us begin this process of seeing where we are and what God is doing among us. On March 14 at 6:00 pm, we will be hosting one of two congregational discussion forums to talk about what intentional living as a church looks like. This requires looking together at what our vision as a community should be. Please make every effort to attend as we want to hear YOUR heart. The second forum will be on April 11, 6 pm. Childcare will be provided.

Invisible Children Presentation

Posted : Sunday March 7, 2010

“There is an invisible war in Africa: one man, Joseph Kony, terrorizing 5 countries.” In Northern Africa, the day to day struggle is not how to get from one appointment to the next or even where the next meal is going to come from, it’s a matter of life and death – who will survive to see tomorrow? Over twenty-three years ago, the LRA – the Lord’s Resistance Army – was formed, with a mission to overthrow the Ugandan government. Since then, the Government of Uganda (GoU) and the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) have been in an endless struggle, with 2 million Ugandan citizens caught in the middle. Since 1996, the LRA has been run by one of the world’s deadliest, most violent leaders, Joseph Kony. Kony’s armies invade villages, burn houses, kill citizens, and kidnap children, forcing them into service of the LRA. There are the Invisible Children.

So where’s the light at the end of this tunnel? It comes in the form of the Invisible Children movement. This political, social, and humanitarian unit works tirelessly to spread awareness, raise funds, and stop the violence now haunting Northern Africa.

And, this March, on Saturday, the twentieth, at 6:00 P.M., it’s YOUR turn to get involved. Representatives from the Invisible Children movement are coming to NEW LIFE! A night filled with music, food, inspiration, and groundbreaking change is planned so that YOU can make a change in Northern Africa. Reps will be presenting the IC produced movie “Invisible Children: Rough Cut” and speak on ways that you can help join in the fight against the LRA. If you’re ready to make your voice heard, if you’re ready to share God’s love with those who hardly know what love is, if you’re ready to make a difference, join us on the twentieth. The Invisible Children group would like to at least 200 people in attendance so let’s go New Life! Let’s make this happen! Let’s embrace this awesome opportunity to share the love and peace found in Christ! Get ready to make a difference!
