Have you ever heard of the “summer slump”? (I am not talking about baseball!)
This is what every teacher dreads at the beginning of each school year.....the two months that the students have off in the summer results in having to review simple principles that were forgotten, and seeing reading levels decline due to non-academic activities throughout the summer. This is especially true in inner cities. Camps are expensive so many students spend their summer in front of the TV or playing video games.
Our after school program would love to see this change. We are offering a Literacy Camp in our Philadelphia neighborhood this summer! For five weeks, the students will be engaged in reading activities, will review reading strategies and will read every weekday for at least 30 minutes. Our goal is to have each student maintain their current reading level or increase!
This is a BRAND new program. We are in our pilot year and are excited to think of how we can positively impact children this summer. We need some help. To defray the cost of this camp, and to make it more affordable for the needy students we are asking for some financial support.
Can you help a child afford camp and keep them reading this summer?
