Worship

Revelation 4 says that all things were created to worship God, “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things and by your will they existed and were created”. In Exodus, God repeatedly declares that the purpose for his saving his people was “so that they may worship Me”. And in Revelation, we see that the redeemed spend their time worshiping God. Now if we’ve been created by God to worship him, if we’ve been saved by God to worship him, and if worshiping God is what we’ll be doing for eternity—then our sole purpose in living now ought to be worshiping God.

This conclusion has been stated throughout the church. Saint Augustine once declared, “O Lord, you have made us for yourself and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in you.” The Heidelberg Catechism puts it like this, “God created [us] in his own image so that we might truly know God our creator, love him with all our heart, and live with him in eternal happiness for his praise and glory.” Or again the Westminster Shorter Catechism puts it in these words, “Man’s chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever.” Worship is not something we do simply once a week. It is not something that is secondary. Worship is the root of our existence! In other words, to be truly human is to worship God alone!
